Teen ballet

A technique class for teens, taught in order at the barre and in the center. It suits teens who are starting and teens who want to train more.

Teens take late-afternoon classes with other teens, and may also join the evening classes that adults take. A teacher places every teen at a placement visit, so the class matches the work.

  • Late-afternoon classes for ages 13 to 17

  • Evening classes shared with adults

  • Pointe when the teacher says so

What a class is like

Five parts, in the same order every time, so a student always knows where the class is going.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Warm-up

A few minutes on the floor to wake the feet, the back and the hips before the barre.

  2. 02

    Step 2: The barre

Slow, exact exercises that build balance and placement, one side and then the other.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The center

The same work without the barre, then a slower combination, called an adagio.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Across the floor

Turns, jumps and traveling steps in groups of a few students, so each is seen.

  5. 05

    Step 5: The reverence

A bow to the teacher and the pianist, and a few minutes to cool down.

Good to know

  • What to wear

A leotard or fitted top, tights and ballet slippers. Hair is off the neck, and jewelry stays at home.

  • Class length

Late-afternoon classes run an hour and fifteen minutes. Evening technique classes run up to an hour and a half.

  • Class size

Classes of up to 12 students, so a teacher can see everyone at the barre.

  • Your level

Foundations or Elementary to start. A teacher places you and says when to move up.
